Sticks, Stones, Role Models and Victims

In the summer of 1971, I was driving to my job as an air-hammer operator on an urban renewal project in New London, CT.  As was typical, I was listening to Don Imus on the radio and the current hit tunes of the time.  At least I think it was 1971; long enough ago to get some memories confused and combined.  However, the content of what I heard has stayed with me since that date.  I remember distinctly the joke that he told and the racist overtones that were anything but subtle.

Pet Peeve #1

Why is it that so many people living in New England have such a hard time clearing the snow off their cars?  Nothing aggravates me more when I'm driving on a miserable day like today, and I'm behind some idiot who can't see out any of his windows or mirrors, or who is oblivious to the fact that the snow on the roof of their car is blowing off as they drive and blinding those of us behind them.

It took me a grand total of 3 minutes to completely clear off my car last night at the height of the storm when I had to pick up my daughter at work.  If getting the snow off their car is that difficult, perhaps they should invest in a snow broom that will clear even the biggest SUV in less time then it took me to clear my car.  Or these idiots could just do the rest of us the favor of staying at home until spring.

First Love

You never forget your first love, or so it's said.  I admit I have loved more then once in my lifetime, and I remember them all.  Of course there are many types of love, and I've loved in many ways, but I do think there's something to the claim that the first one is unforgettable.

Rare and Beautiful

There are people in this world who embody everything that is beautiful and good. Like the sun, they enter every nook and crevice of a room when they enter. Life and warmth radiates from them with an innocence and ease that causes every living thing to automatically raise their faces to them, the same as flowers to sunshine. These people are rare.

Antiwar March Deja Vu

There I was, me and my knapsack on the train headed to DC, reading a book and anticipating the next day's march on the Pentagon. Familiar, I almost considered going without a hotel reservation but was glad, especially considering the cold weather, I had a place to stay.

Shoes

My daughter came home with yet another pair of impractical shoes yesterday. I'm a woman and I don't get it. How can anyone need so many pairs of high heeled strappy little numbers? What good are they in the middle of winter? A person certainly can't do much in them any other time either. It would take a highly experienced woman to out run or out maneuver someone else at the Macy's clearing rack wearing these contraptions. Although I did see an episode of Law & Order once that had one of these foot torturing devices as the murder weapon. I'm surprised the school hasn't caught on yet that my daughter is wearing weapons to school everyday.

Abandoned Places

I have always been attracted to abandoned places, factories, hospitals left to the weather and vandals, houses with fallen roofs and strands of curtain still hanging; spaces once inhabited.

Recently, I found a web site, Opacity.com, that features photos of just such places and came across a series of shots of a state hospital where I was once employed.

Unfriendly Skies

I hadn't flown for some time, and have never flown much. Not airline-savvy. So, when our flight was cancelled, a while after it was scheduled to take off, while it was still listed as "on time", I didn't know what my options were.

The Gay Animal Kingdom

My boyfriend recently forwarded me a very interesting article by Michael Abernethy about the gay animal kingdom, a topic that I’ve been reading about for a few years now, ever since the news of gay penguins and sheep. Although the idea is frightening to some (the children’s book based off of the gay penguins, “And Tango Makes Three,” has caused quite a stir in recent years), it can be liberating and enlightening in many ways.

College Redux

I recently communicated via email with someone from Colby-Sawyer College and it helped me realize that there are other things I remember from my days in college other then just Badminton and Dr. Koop. I didn't get to know many of my fellow students since I was a day student. I mostly remember my classes and professors.
