UNH football notes Sept. 19
Submitted by Monitor UNH sports on September 19, 2008 - 21:16. Rte. 4 / East | SportsIt felt like old times for the UNH offense last Saturday – footballs filling the air, a hail of points, eight different receivers catching passes, four runners carrying it, big plays all over the place and two measly punts. Who needs Ricky Santos anyway?
UNH recovers, game over...finally
Submitted by Monitor UNH sports on September 13, 2008 - 16:12. Rte. 4 / East | SportsMike Boyle, who else, recovers the onsides kick and finally, finally it's over. UNH 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the CAA with the home opener against Albany coming up next Saturday.
UNH 51, URI 43 :56.2 fourth
Submitted by Monitor UNH sports on September 13, 2008 - 16:09. Rte. 4 / East | SportsShort field goal for the Rams. Now it's all on the onside kick. I'm exhausted. Over 1,000 yards of offense and nearly 100 points. Wild, wild game. Not too many fans in the stands in Kingston a
Young mans up
Submitted by Monitor UNH sports on September 13, 2008 - 16:01. Rte. 4 / East | SportsThe UNH defense was looking exhausted and had allowed URI to get into UNH territory in two short plays. Then Steve Young finds some reserves, blows up the center off the snap and sacks Cassidy to slow URI's roll. Redshirt freshman Brian McNally was also there. Less than three minutes left.
Trickeration
Submitted by Monitor UNH sports on September 13, 2008 - 15:58. Rte. 4 / East | SportsOn fourth-and-two from the 33 UNH lined up for a field goal, but the snap went directly to Tom Bishop, who was lined up to kick it. He pooched it beautifully and pins URI at their own 7. But one play later Cassidy to Joe Bellini for a 33-yard gain.
UNH 51, URI 40 4:49 fourth
Submitted by Monitor UNH sports on September 13, 2008 - 15:54. Rte. 4 / East | SportsCassidy just found Nick Del Grosso for a 2-yd TD pass. UNH was in a soft prevent, but that was an awfully easy drive for the Rams, who have no quit in them. Cassidy has the first 300-yard passing game at URI since 1985. The UNH d-line is not getting the pass rush it did early in the game and the dbs are not covering tightly.
UNH 51, URI 33 6:40
Submitted by Monitor UNH sports on September 13, 2008 - 15:45. Rte. 4 / East | SportsA 19-yard field goal from Manning puts UNH back up by three scores. Kackert ripped off a 45-yard run on the drive, showing a nice ability to quickly shift into high gear and make tacklers look silly. He could be in line for CAA Offensive Player of the Week honors.
UNH 48, URI 33 10:15
Submitted by Monitor UNH sports on September 13, 2008 - 15:37. Rte. 4 / East | SportsLouis Feinstein hits a 32-yard field goal to make it a two-score game. Since the first quarter the Wildcats have had trouble getting stops on third down, but they did the "bend don't break&qu
UNH 48, URI 30 13:26 fourth
Submitted by Monitor UNH sports on September 13, 2008 - 15:27. Rte. 4 / East | SportsBoyle makes a catch in traffic, breaks a couple tackles and scores to finish a 5-play, 40-yard drive that took 2:22. Nice throw from Toman.
I guess the offense doesn't miss that Ricky guy. It really has looked like the same kind of attack that UNH used the last four years to propel itself into the I-AA elite. The URI defenders haven't been allowing the receivers run as free as they were early in the game, but there always seems to be someone open, some play to be made out there in this UNH spread assault. Props to Toman and offensive coordinator Sean Devine for smart decisions all day long. The two turnovers were the fault of perhaps the two most talented offensive players - Boyle and Sicko - and while those mistakes need to be corrected, the positives for Boyle and Sicko far outweighed the negatives.
UNH 41, URI 30 end of third
Submitted by Monitor UNH sports on September 13, 2008 - 15:19. Rte. 4 / East | SportsBoyle made a great shoestring catch as the quarter ends, pushing UNH deep into URI territory. Not only did he go way low to get it, but he didn't lose his feet in the process. That balance is also Welker-like. Somebody call Belichick.
