The plummet in the cost of gasoline came later. More people are demonstrably beginning to use public transportation as their main means of getting around in lieu of driving. Now, as more people are using the buses, right now there is talk about the gas commissioner raising the gas tax even more. Gas taxes are one of the main sources of funds for federal highway projects, and the current income they're receiving just isn't enough apparently. Check out this article for more about payday loans and how gas prices have affected the country.

Once again, Teri is the voice of sanity and reason. Since it became clear that Obama would win the election, these chains of comments on comments on comments on comments have become increasingly mean-sprited and shrill.

I propose a moritorium on natonal politics until February 3, which is two weeks after the Inauguration. Let's give the new administration two weeks in office before we start screaming at each other about them.

History Isn't A Video Game...

Rewriting history seems to be popular these days among people who call themselves progressives. Perhaps it is just human nature to create a past that is more comfortable and lines up better with our personal beliefs. While revising history may make us feel better it is a dangerous exercise. It allows people to excuse the inexcusable and justify the horrific.

Does this series of incomprehensible facts about Ashcroft lead to a point? It seems to imply that following the rules established by States regarding elections is somehow a violation of citizens voting rights. In America we have laws that control how elections will be held to insure the sanctity of each election. They are clearly not perfect but those that continue to feed the conspiracy theories and rewrite history are simply disruptive to the process. Election fraud needs to be closely investigated and the results widely reported. America can only be maintain her freedom if people of good faith prevail. Constant accusations and charges only serve to further diminish the faith of the governed.Since it was brought up, history also tells us that Al Gore only wanted to count the votes of people that favored him...his legal team took great pains to exclude military ballots in Florida.

Facts are facts...

I am somewhat perplexed by the extent of the hate directed at people of faith. Liberals have had a fondness for preaching tolerance, yet when conservatives speak at universities, liberals are the ones that use "shout down" demonstrations to silence opinions they do not share. Our founders were believers for the most part, some were deists some were atheist, they might disagree about religion but they recognized that no government that allowed itself to enter into denominational squabbles would survive.

In reading the founders words they come alive with the understanding that faith was an everyday part of their life. They saw no problem calling on the almighty for our very survival. They did not burden themselves with petty squabbles relating to individual beliefs.

Churches in our society do good things they do not go out of their way to point to those things everyday. In fact in New Hampshire many families receive help from the generosity of people of faith, to help them get through tough times. Why insult thousands of people who want no credit for being their brothers keeper? Virtue without morality can exist why is it so hard for liberals to understand that Virtue with morality does not endanger them?

Heather has to Mommies is a personal choice that does not need to be codified by law nor should it seek to challenge the sanctity of marriage. We can establish legally binding contracts that do not seek to diminish traditional views of marriage. It is exactly that type of in your face political mentality and posturing that makes compromise and tolerance difficult. Using divorce rates as a method for legitimizing a position is foolish. The goal of marriage since the dawn of civilization has been to protect children and create legally binding ways to insure their care. We can argue if that has been successful or no, we can even discuss new ways to accomplish this end, but don't use it a a means of justifying a new paradigm.

Another particularly frustrating habit of liberals is the use of quotes out of context to support some distortion of a conservative point of view. W's quote was aimed at countries that were supporting terrorists by giving them safe harbor or financial aid. There was no broader context and anyone that reads more into it than that is reaching for something that just isn't there.

When even the most diametrically opposed groups of people speak reasonably some common ground can be found. In most cases it boils down to the old saw, we have two ears and only one mouth perhaps listening is the most important element of communication...just saying! History isn't a video game, you can't simply rewrite it to create an outcome or result that is more aesthetically pleasing.

Yo Bill, Ashcroft lost to a

Yo Bill, Ashcroft lost to a dead guy right? And I do not see a problem with leaving polls open later than scheduled.
Ashcroft was later chosen, by the chosen one, to be attorney general. The first thing he did was annoint himself with oil. Later he spent $8,000 of tax money to cover the boob of a statue. Who was the real boob here?

If you read the whole NY Times article you would have found way down near the end that they said that Gore probably would have won if the vote recount was allowed. The bottom line here Bill, is that the Supremes intervened and told the state of Florida that they could not count the votes because if Bush came out on the short end it would hurt his feelings. Now, usually the Republicans are screaming about states rights, but in this case the state right to COUNT THE VOTES was denied, marvelous. Bush claimed that the Bible god wanted Him to run for president. Hey, maybe Bush was right about that. He lost the popular vote and mysteriously someone impregnated all those chads. And they were amazed.

If the churches want to do charity, let them do it. If they are getting Billions of dollars to do it, it is not charity it is a job. The churches are getting paid by Big Brother to do charity and are allowed to discriminate in hiring, but they take all the credit. "Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them."

The founders, aparently were interest in both, not establishing a state religion or prohibiting the free exercise of religion, that is why the first amendment says what it does. The part about making no law respecting an establishment of religion came first, by the way. As far as "separation" goes it has been used in numerous SC decisions.

No Santa, Easter Bunny, and tooth fairy? That's where you are wrong Bill. I am a firm believer in the Easter Bunny.

Bill, you are confusing liberals with atheists. I am both a liberal and an atheist and a gun owner too. Most liberals that I know are religious or they believe in invisible sky phantasms or some new age crap. But as far as social change goes, we are much better off as a result of the social changes that evolved out of the sixties. Come along and evolve with us Bill. You can do it. We can help.

I am glad that you almost agree with me on abortion rights.

I think that the reason for the Heather has two mommies thing, is to protect Heather more than the mommies. School children can be very cruel and they will single out the different ones. That is why the schools are trying to get across to kids that just because people come from different backgrounds that does not mean that they should be picked on ostracized or even beat up. It is about Heather.
The reason that I brought up the divorce rate is because of DOMA, defense of marriage act. The whole idea is that if gays are allowed the same rights of marriage as heteros, then marriage will be destroyed. The 50% divorce rate makes this look like breathtaking innanity.

And lastly, phew, who was it that said, "you are either with us or you are with the terrorists." No compromise there Bill, and this statement is flat out erroneous, but typical Dubya and crowd.

Gotta go, time to sacrifice a chicken to Satan.

Shalom,
Responding In Kind

There is no fact to stealing an election in 2000. The NY Times and several Florida newspapers did report on several occasions that Gore did not win Florida. Let's start with that flawed premise. Of course, I did not see your concern about John Ashcroft having his seat stolen through public officials allowing the polls to stay open longer to defeat him. A move undertaken by Democrats. That is well documented.

Please show me mainstream reporting of how these institutions which you claim are religious are feeding at the public trough. Everything I have read tells us that they do not "profit" on distributing the little funds that are available. Beyond that it is quite efficient.

Now, I know that you want some bleeding heart bureaucrat working for a partisan administration doling out charity, but that would be less efficient. Next, please show me in the Constitution where the word "separation" is used. The founders were interested in the state not prohibiting freedom of religion more than they were worried about a state run religion or the influence of religion on government. BUT.....even constitutional experts can not come to agreement on the language.

The idols in the public square thing does not matter to me one way or the other but today's left in this country see themselves as 'enlightened' and take the enjoyment out of EVERYTHING; replacing it with their version of STARK reality. Next they will want it mandated and taught in schools that there is no Santa or Easter Bunny or Tooth Fairy.

Liberals are so afraid of religion, belief and GOD. They think that they have it all figured out. We live, we die, we rot is their call of the day. That feeds moral relativism which opens the door to all kinds of social change which progressive thinkers want validated. With belief and faith out of the way, the road is easier to navigate.

I am glad that you brought up abortion because the excuse of a woman's right to choose is not the only reason why progressives support it. They support it because they do not want poorer families to bring more children into the world and they support it because they are concerned about world population growth. As I have stated in many letters and on this blog before, that is between a woman and her doctor. I do not want to pay for abortions (I would think with your view of public funds going to religious charities to redistribute you would agree...but maybe not), I do not want to pay of counseling as it is related to their "choice" and I find late term or partial birth abortions criminal in the absence of a threat to the life of the mother. I support a woman's right to choose but with that choice comes the responsibility to live with the choice should it not turn out well or the way they you expected.

Finally, gay marriage was a point that you addressed. No issue with the relationship and once again it is a personal choice and decision and it is a private matter. My children do not have to be "informed" or "educated" about it on the public dime and there is absolutely no need for marriage. As far as failure rate of heterosexual marriage is concerned, bringing up that statistic is irrelevant to the argument.

Tell me, why is it whenever someone makes a point, progressives respond with a "two wrongs make a right" approach?

No matter, it does not make someone afraid or a bigot or closed minded or lacking tolerance to have a different belief than a liberal. It just means that they have a different opinion and the trick is to find middle ground and consensus.

The latter two issues are ones that illustrate an "all or nothing" approach by progressives. That is the reason for the divide that we are experiencing in this country.

That also applies to conservative who will not yield. There is room for common ground on both of those issue by meeting half way.

Until then, both sides will continue to spew rhetoric and bring up the past and make accusations in the absence of agreement and consensus.

If we met half way? Now that would be "progress"!

Response to Bill

I cannot respond to all of the above with a sound bite, so I will start with my favorite: religion and government united. I hate to be a whiner, but we never had an office of faith based initiatives before the (executive order) Dubya and his #1 advisor (you know who I mean right?) stole the electon in 2000.

Taxpayers are now funding (in $BILLIONS) religious organizations who discriminate in hiring employees. Of course they can discriminate when they are on their own dime, but when they are sucking at the public troth (more than ever), they must obey the civil rights of employees to their freedom of religion. That is what separation of church and state is about. It promulgates freedom of religion. Ironically perhaps, the US is the most religious country in the western world, outside of maybe Italy and Ireland. It is seperation of church and state that has allowed religion to flourish in this country. That of course does not stop the Pat Robertson's (who recieved $14 million from us) from WHINING about being persecuted. Just an aside, but how is Ted Haggard doing these days?

There is a relentless attack on freedom of religion by the religious right when they insist upon placing their idols in the public square. And this time of year it is obsessive. They are perfectly free to place their idols on their own properties, but they lust after imposing their sectarian beliefs upon others, with the aid of Big Brother. Why do they need the arm of the state to prop the up? So sad.

Bill, you said, "Liberals are abel to remove the moral stigma of social issues which they want to realize (abortion, gay marriage, etc.)." Moral stigma? That's a good one Bill. Abortion rights are good for women, good for families, and good for America. Compulsory pregnacy enforced by politicians is a form of slavery. But this is not really about the sanctity of life, it is about the sanctity of authority. And women must be subjected to the authority of patriachy. I just say no to that.

Gay marriage? Moral stigma? Heterosexual marriage in America has a 50% divorce rate. Are the gays going to increase that? Once again I must ask, what are you afraid of Bill?

Shalom,
I Respond To Infidel

This is not an accurate definition of Fascism. Fascism is defined in terms of Mussolini and Hitler. But let me address each point here.

Powerful and continuing nationalism-Not happening here with the results of the latest election, the plurality is with those who lean to Socialism.

Disdain for human rights-You must mean Gitmo but there is and has been none of this on this shore. However, is abortion not disdain for a life?

Identification of enemies as unifying cause-You mean, like "neo-con", "Fascist" and other fear mongering by the Left

Militarism-Not on our own shores and not as large as in the past.

Controll of media-Can anyone say NPR, PBS or Congressmen wanting to institute the "fairness doctrine"?

Obsession with national security-How is this Fascist. Have you ever heard the story of the Trojan Horse?

Corporate power protected-This has happened of late but without corporations we would have no economy.

Labor suppressed-Not happening. Many workers want NOTHING to do with corrupt union bosses and dues paid to support only liberal candidates.

Disdain for intellectuals-Not really happening but those on the Left sure do not have any use for any intellectual or minority unless they think as they do.

Obsession with crime and punishment-Bogus argument...we are more lenient than ever with criminals today.

Rampant cronyism and corruption-Yes, let's take a look at government and state employees and see who they knew to get their jobs.......you left out nepotism.

Fraudulent elections-Like the one ACORN worked towards. Or St Louis leaving polls open later to beat John Ashcroft or dead people voting in Chicago.

And my personal favovite: Religion and government united-Now when has that happened in recent years. You folks whine so much about separation of church and state when there is not firming up of their relationship.

To the latter, driving a wedge there means that liberals are able to remove the moral stigma of social issues which they want to realize (abortion, gay marriage, etc.)

Shalom,

The point is that Bush is a fascist. It is only a matter drgree as to the enormity of the crimes. Bush committed the #1 international crime by invading another country and occupying it.

I don't know anyone who subscribes to that. But I believe that torture is wrong and that the use of torture in the last eight years came from the top. I hope that someone will pay for this wrong-headed idea and practice. Hopefully, there are those who will have the courage to bring charges against the criminal government we've been living with as the new year begins.

You cannot possibly subscribe to the notion that Abu Gharib and Treblinka are somehow equivalent. Disagree about ideas and solutions but do not rewrite history, that is what true demagogues do...it is the genesis of fuhrers and mullahs.
