Sun Java Update Fixes "Highly Critical" Vulnerabilities

|

Almost every PC has Sun Java running on it (if you're not sure, you can follow this link and check by clicking on "Do I have Java?"). This latest update fixes multiple "Highly Critical" vulnerabilities that allow security restrictions to be bypassed (among other things) and compromise a vulnerable system.

To update your version, go into your 'Control Panel', scroll down to "Java" and double-click on it. Then when the Java Control Panel opens click on the "Update" [tab] and at the bottom click on the "Update Now" [button].

If you've read some of my prior posts about updating your software you'll know I recommend "The Secunia Software Inspector", available on the Secunia web site. Coincidentally, the online software scan requires 'Java' to work. [It] will scan your PC for outdated and vulnerable versions of most major software along with the latest Microsoft Updates.

Be aware that Sun Java doesn't remove it's previous version from your computer, so it's necessary for you to remove the previous version yourself (this link provides step-by-step instructions using the "Add or Remove Programs" in your 'Control Panel'). If you don't, the Secunia Software Inspector will continue to highlight the old version (in the scan's results) until you uninstall it. Keeping the old version on your PC wastes space, and could leave you vulnerable to attack.
