Mother Nature's Concert

|

I was laying in bed listening to the wild ride outside our windows.  The lightening lit up our room on a continuous basis, the thunder sounded like it was rolling right across our rooftop.  The fish tank and clocks stopped briefly, but started right back up, just long enough to have to reset the digital alarm clock (how inconvenient is that?!).

As dangerous and damaging as such storms can be, the power of Mother Nature leaves me awestruck.  Often times during thunderstorms I will sit on my porch to watch the show.  My children have likewise come to enjoy the spectacle. I have often had to call them in from running around in the street or front yard during storms.

Last night I was glad to be tucked into bed with the ability to resist leaping out of bed to stand on the front porch or even near a window to watch the show, although the urge did strike me.  My juggernaut is Mother Earth; I feel its tug continually. I dig in the earth as relaxation.  I would much rather tug at the weeds in my garden then lay down a strip of plastic to keep them from growing.  My S.O. laughs at me because I will come in from the garden covered from head to toe in soil and muck, but will freak at the sight of a bug (the one living thing on this earth that truly creeps me out).  I am one of those who will call to him to rescue me from the "huge" spider in the bathtub.  I have dragged my children on countless hikes, tried to get them to admire every changing color in the fall woods and let them frolic in rock-strewn rivers in order to appease my insatiable need to be near Mother Nature.  I always thought I would have loved the Native American way of life before white man came and destroyed their culture.  I even once considered the Wiccan religion as a culture I could embrace.

As I lay listening, I found an old catchphrase from a ‘70's TV commercial repeating itself in my head.  "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature" a voice kept bellowing.  I couldn't help wondering what Mother Nature was so irate about today.  I didn't watch any of the Live Earth concerts.  Was there something there to bother our Mother?  Or is this just the exclamation point to that event?  "See what will come if you fool Mother Nature" the voice bellows again.  Mother's show is much more dramatic and enticing then any concert we lowly peons could concur up.

We only have this one shot at doing right.  We can't look back in the years to come and ask ourselves how do we fix a dying planet.  It makes much more sense to work now at keeping her healthy.
