A Day at the Fair
It was a busy weekend for us, with two BBQ's to attend, my high school class reunion and a trip to the Craftsmen's Fair in Sunapee. By Sunday's BBQ, I was tired and irritable, but that is another blog for another day. We make the trip to Sunapee's Fair every year. Even when we can't afford to buy, it is a nice day of looking at some beautiful craftsmanship. The people on Sunapee couldn't have asked for more perfect weather this past weekend.
We spent more then 4 hours going from tent to tent, booth to booth. This year we did buy some artwork to hang on the newly remodeled walls of our stairwell, as well as the yearly jewelry item. We also get some great gift ideas and usually end up coming home with a small stack of cards of craftsmen we will look up later (I was smart this year and wrote on the back what it was that intrigued us about the particular artists).
Our favorite booths are always the pottery, wood furniture and photography artisans, but there are always a wide variety of others we can't resist stopping by to view their wares. There have been years when we have gone to the fair and seen many of the same craftsmen and crafts, and although it is nice to see a favorite artist, it is also nice to see changes in designs and new artists. This year seemed to have a nice mix of both for us. We always like watching the glass blower and woodworkers, but there is usually something for everyone with weavers, potters and carvers showing off their skills.
I have often brought my children with me to the fair. They have plenty there to keep children occupied and entertained with a children's workshop tent, face painting, music and if it gets down to it, my children always liked sliding and rolling down the side of the mountain. And after a few hours of walking the fair, it's nice to go across the roundabout at the bottom of the mountain and spend a couple of hours swimming in the lake.
Cost to get into the fair is $10.00 per person, although children 12 and under are free and there are discounts for seniors, groups and students. The tickets are also good for two days (so bring the kids one day, and come on your own the next!). The fair continues throughout the week until Sunday the 12th, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
