Immigration, Economics & Stolen Land

|

In writing about the recent immigration issues which have beset our country, several other bloggers have come to the forefront in their defense of the illegal immigrants, their economic status, and as Dan Meeks stated 'Why can we not let God do what God does best? Provide fairness, liberty, justice, and opportunity for all people'. These issues are predicated on one underlying factor: fairness.

Last time I checked, Life isn't fair. You make the most of what you are given. But let's face facts. The economic conditions in Mexico are not the best, due in large part to their corrupt government. So why are Mexicans not being urged to lobby against corruption, vote against corrupt politicians, and rise up and demand a fair government?? Because the Mexican government wants them to LEAVE! At one point, the Mexican governement published pamphlets detailing routes illegal immigrants could take to get to the US.

Why can't we provide fairness, liberty, justice & opportunity for all people in the US? Why can't we let God do what God does best? Again, life isn't fair. God knows this. And he asks us to help those who are suffering. But social justice can't and won't work on this side of the border. Why? Many Mexicans are taking jobs from hard-working Americans. They are filling our emergency rooms to capacity. They strain our already stressed social services. And they EXPECT Americans to pay for all this, as they cannot, do not, or will not. Do you want an increase in your taxes to fund some of this? Do you want your purchaing power to go down? Do you want an increase in your health insurance because of the losses of your insurance company? I expect you'd say no to all of the above.

There is also the movement in Mexican colleges and universities which promotes the thought that California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas were stolen from Mexico. They conviently forgot the history of that area which involved the Mexican General, Santa Anna (also the Mexican president), who was roundly beaten by US/Texan forces at the Battle of San Jacinta, in Texas. With the capture of Santa Anna, Mexico gave up all claim to the lands it was seeking (including the states named above), giving Anglos the right to settle as far south as the Rio Grande, and as far west as the Pacific Ocean. The Battle of San Jacinto and the San Jacinto Campaign is an excellent source of historical information regarding this battle, and it's impact on the development of the Southwest US.

This has certainly become a heated topic not only here, but in all aspects of society. The best resolution to this issue is for Congress to make new laws regarding immigration, for Mexico to encourge the growth of it's economy, and for the citizens of Mexico to foster a country committed to growth and education so that more of it's valuable workforce won't seek to immigrate due to lack of jobs.

HMMM

Dear Susan, Lets see?????? I'm 55 years old now and I started to work when I was thirteen. I've seen a "constant" thru these years, but I have never known the reason why until a few minutes ago. My taxes on every level, and in every way, have gone up each year, So has my insurance, my clothing bill, my energy bill, my mortgage bill, my prescription drug bill, my grocery bill, my entertainment bill, my education bill, my newspaper bill, my cable bill, my communications bill, my vacation bill and I think that I pay more for less now than I ever have. My pay has gone up, but not as fast as inflation. In fact the only thing that I know of that has gone down is the value of my dollar bills. And all this time, the fault has been Mexico's. I mean no offense, and I offer this only in respect to your opinion-- It is a lot easier for me to think of the here and now of individuals than to speculate that the Mexican, or for that matter the USA, is going to change their politics or their economics in the forseeable future.

I would also contend that fairness is not the only major issue that needs to be considered. How about being humane? Sometimes it is easy to generalize about laws, about what corrupt governments should do, the hard working American Workforce, etc.... The possibilty of the Mexican Government changing their stripes seems remote... as also is the posture of some of the Mexican academia. We will not give up our land. I know I don't have the important answers on this issue. I would just like to not lose sight that the illegal immigrants are more than a genealization. They are human beings. They are also already moved in. Rhetoric is not liable to solve the problem. Maybe a more comprehensive strategy is? I am open to that. Dan Meeks

Seeking a better way

Over a hundred years ago, farming towns from Maine to Connecticut lamented the migration of their youngsters to the mill towns. It depleted a generation of farmers from those towns. In this way, the US is now the mill town; Mexico the farming towns.

Back then, our economy was largly agarian-based; we were making strides into the Industrial Age. We have since surpassed the Industrial Age, and are firmly entrenched in the Technology Age.

I say all of this with the realization that Mexico has the potential of losing it's best generation to come. All those children, young adults, who have knowledge, and are able to contribute to the economy are no longer in Mexico. We all are exposed to technology, no matter where we live. The mother of a friend who moved to Mexico upon her retirement, relates that internet cafe's are everywhere and many schools are equivalent to average US schools. Remember Mexico is not a 'poor' country. It has the fourth largest economy in the world, due to immense oil & gas reserves.

It would be wonderful if Mexico could step up to the challenge of keeping their best resource: their citizens. Hopefully thru pressure and laws from our government, coverage from our media, and our enforcement of our borders, it send a clear message to President Fox to reform his government and put in place better economic programs, so the citizens of his country will not want to leave.

Dan Meeks's picture

I agree

I agree with you... this would be a wonderful thing. I hope that it happens. I can live with your mill town/farming town analogy. However, saying that Mexico is in danger of losing a generation is stretching it a bit. It is more probable that the "haves" are doing quite well in Mexico. I think the "have nots" are the ones coming here for the most part; and they have a whole lot of "have not" family members still living in Mexico. The principle of "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer" is one that works both in Mexico and in the USA. One thing that the USA provides is "opportunity" otherwise they probably wouldn't come here. Even a 5% possibilty of a better life is better than no possibility at all.

I am a amazed that I am talking about immigration issues. I guess you never know where blogging will take you.

You just never know...

I never thought I would write about immigraion issues, either. But living in two border states (New Hampshire & Texas) it's really come to the forefront, especially in Texas.

Your 'haves v have nots' is exactly what is happening, but it's not a new tune. Many immigrants have done the same thing...Heck, I remember some Greek families in Concord working like crazy (and they still do!) and sending money home to Greece for their families, and for a better life.

The thought of opportunity has brought many here, you are correct. And these people have obeyed our laws, assimilated into our society, learned our language, our history, and adopted new customs; all of which are necessary to living in a new country. If I were living in France, I'd have to learn French, learn the customs and their history, obey their laws, and assmiliate into their society. The problem here is that the Mexicans don't learn English because everything is bi-lingual (wish I was!!), don't adopt our customs, don't know our history, our customs, and don't want to become assimilated into our culture, and don't want to become American citizens.

I can't recall a time in history when this has occured. The Roman Empire was unified, as was the Russian Empire (before Communism), as were the British, Spanish and Dutch Empires. This is going to be an interesting resolution to our immigration issues.

Dan Meeks's picture

I can agree

You and I are on the same wavelength in terms of becoming American Citizens. If someone is going to call the USA home. They need to establish appropriate residency in the town/city they live in and they should obey the terms of allegiance to our country. If they are not willing to do this, then I would say they need to return to the country of their origin (sp?)and live in the country they are loyal too. On another note... our own academia has nurtured the whole "english as a second language" and "cultural diversity culture" in our country. They (we) have been doing this for many years. A couple of years ago I was talking to a man who had immigrated to America from Russia. This was after the borders opened and he was very proud to be an American. This man was angry because he believed that when a person becomes an American... they should live as an American. He stated that this was "the great melting pot", and he was upset that people would come here and want to change America into a version of their home nation. He was prouder to be an American than a lot of Americans I know. He is a good man. I agree that the INS should have laws and rules that they enforce. Our huge problem is that there are already millions of people who have not followed our laws. I think this is your point. This is a very complicated problem we have. I wish I had more wisdom. My hope is that the "individual" not be lost in our consideration of what we do as a "community". I would also like our new immigrants to obey the law. If they are criminals who cannot live as law abiding citizens then they are not candidates for citizenship here. Our prisons are far too over-crowded as it is. So, I think we agree on some things. I would just be against "load them all up and ship them all back" en mass.

Immigration

Patricia Cummings

If one listens to the media, one would think that our only problem in this country is newly arrived immigrants...particularly those from Mexico. There are many other so-called "illegal-es" here, from many countries, perhaps up to twenty million of them.

Having attended the Immigrant Rally in Manchester on May 1, I could clearly see that all who were there were reverent toward this country, were here because they love freedom and they want a new life, and moreover, they WANT to work and are working! They are trying to learn English because they know that to survive here, they must do so!

For those who would be given a beautiful yellow rose bud, but would only choose to see the thorns, well...these are the naysayers of the world. They have their own agendas, not the LEAST of which is thier political views.

These are the people who think that every Mexican is either a drug dealer, a pregnant woman about to give birth in order to have an "anchor" baby, as the child would be called by some in Texas, or the person is just here to run up the cost of living for the rest of us.

As Dan points out, there is a human element to all of this. If you lived in a country where there was a tree full of rotten apples that were so wormy, there was no hope of making a pie with them, but on the other side of the fence, there was a beautiful apple tree, laden down with large, succulent apples that would make a tasty pie, which side of the fence would you try to be on? Mexico needs new incentives to keep their populace at home. That goes for Venezuela, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and so many other Latin American countries that have people dying to emigrate to the United States.

Calderon is the new president of Mexico. He has initially given voice to plans to strengthen Mexico economically. Let's hope this is the case. Little children should not be saying that they want to grow up to be "just like Daddy" and leave their home village to go work in America.

In New Hampshire, we have a large entourage of people from "somewhere else." On Fisherville Rd. alone, there are many, many people who appear to be from Africa, and they dress in very bright and colorful attire.

By last estimate, there were more than two hundred different languages spoken in the city. Some of the immigrants are here because they have been sponsored by local churches.

New Hampshire has a diverse population now, particularly in our larger cities. It is clear that it is not economically feasible to try to "send these people" all back. Proposals by Congress have been, at times, totally unreasonable, involving sending people back, making them "wait in line," allowing them to work, sending them back. What a yo-yo idea, in more ways than one. Talk about disrupting people's lives and punishing them, not once, but repeatedly. Idiocy!

At the same time, I can understand the viewpoint of Texans, to some extent, and those who live in the four border states. Their frustration is apparent if one listens to the newly formed urban myths that are flying fast and furious about such things as a welfare mother pulling to collect her food stamps in her expensive SUV, paid for by the state. Not likely. I also wonder if the extra costs of health care that are being discussed are not a bit over-inflated.

The immigrants, in fact, DO pay taxes. If they are working for a legitimate employer, they pay social security, federal and state income tax, and like the rest of us, they pay sales taxes, rooms and meal taxes, etc.

The employers who hire illegal immigrants should be the ones being fined and ostracized.

There is just a lot of misunderstanding and confusion and false allegations against people who are easily profiled as being non-U.S. natives. Just one word about the word "illegal."

The strongest detractors grab ahold of the word and won't let it go. Do we not, as a nation, have some responsibility toward these same people who were allowed to come here, or overstayed their visas but were not reminded to go home?

If we have turned our backs so that these same workers could be exploited, or used by our system, to make money for a few, it seems that they are not entirely to blame and it also is unfair to call them "criminals."

The money that is being wasted, "your" money, is in building walls, in lieu of more direct negotiation with the Mexican government. It seems unlikely that any wall could be made impenetrable.

People can either go over a wall, or under a wall, or around a wall, and maybe even through a wall. Or, they will find alternative routes as some have found already, such as through sewer pipes, on their bellies.

The money spent on walls could go along way toward alleviating the suffering of many. If not used in that manner, it sure would be great to see a balanced federal budget again, as we had under President Clinton.

Yes, in a political year, rhetoric abounds. A lot of it makes no sense. I have to think that if the government were more concerned with PEOPLE, rather than with bureaucratic POLICIES, we would be a whole lot better off.

Everyone has an opinion. The above are a few of mine.

Sincerely,

Patricia Cummings

very nice

Patricia, I enjoyed reading your blog. Today, Karl Rove was on TV telling us how great the job the Bush administration has been doing to curb illegal immigration. Mr. Rove is one of President Bush's main political advisors. Someone is not telling the truth. Either Mr. Rove is right and Bush is continuing to make strong headway to turn the tide of illegal immigration; or the media is right when they slame Mr. Bush's stance on amnesty and poor safeguards on our borders.

Let me ask your opinion. What would happen if the United States of America granted amnesty to all illegal aliens? This is not a trick question. I would like to hear what you think.

King Bush, Illegal Immigration & the North American Union

Is this concerted effort on behalf of the Democratic & Republican coalition to implement the (NAU) North American Union? The first stage was to flood our country, with a monolithic tide of foreign nationals, followed by the unrestricted movement of Mexican trucks. Is this an intentional de-construction of the U.S. sovereignty? Is Senator Graham an International Globalist’s, along with McCain, Lott, Specter and his Royal Highness Bush and his retinue of corporate mafiosi?
The Council of La Raza (The Race) a radical, anarchistic organization that the U.S. Taxpayer supports with their call to occupy the Southwest, with a silent invasion of foreign national's is furious. Their sponsors in our shadow corporate government were outgunned this time by the American citizens. They woke up just in time to recognize the menace to our flag, U.S. constitution and our culture. But, alas the fight is not over yet? Let’s enforce the laws of the 1986 Immigration reform bill, as they are codified and already for fulfillment.

Occupation of the SouthWestern States

The American Southwest was explored and colonized by SPAIN. California was explored and colonized by SPAIN in 1542. Spain gave California to Mexico. Approximately two years later, Alta California VOLUNTARILY ceded from Mexican semi-rule and joined the United States. Since California became part of America, Mexico’s had about multi bloody REVOLUTIONS. Mexico was not recognized as a legitimate country/nation until the early 1900’s. Texas VOLUNTARILY seceded from Mexico by winning its own independence in 1836. Subsequent to winning its own independence, Texas joined the United States along with Territories of New Mexico and Arizona approximately 1845-1847. (used as staging grounds for foraying renegade outlaws) were sparsely populated badlands that were eventually absorbed into the United States. Border settled by war, treaty, and payment. Mexico never actually controlled the American Southwest, as it was too far north. No more than 2000 so-called Mexicans ever lived in the American Southwest. Those so-called Mexicans (Spanish colonizers and Catholic priests) were not forced to leave or give up their Ranches and missions upon becoming Americans. And the Native American Indians of the Southwest do not remember ever having been Mexican citizens or a mythical Azatlyanians [sic]. Mexico was explored, colonized, and named by SPAIN. I.e., the countries of Mexico and the United States were both similarly formed by European exploration and colonization. The only nation that might have a claim to the American Southwest is European SPAIN. “Spain would have title” Not the Conquesta’s, Not Azatlyn,

Not the country South of the border where 99 percent of its people live in abject poverty, while the 1 % live like Sultans.

Government South of the Border

'Not the country South of the border where 99 percent of its people live in abject poverty, while the 1 % live like Sultans.'  This is very telling of the Mexican 'Government'  I put government in parens because It is a well known fact that the Government of Mexico is corrupt.  If this corruption stopped, and free enterprise were to take over in Mexico, the vast resources of minerals, oil and gas could be explored.  People would have jobs, and Mexico would be a very wealthy nation.

Your paragraph above this telling last sentence is puzzing to me. What would be the point are you trying to make here?

McCain is for amnesty

AZCONSERVATIVE

Last night in the debate, McCain claimed he was not for amnesty and quoted a dictionary definition of amnesty meaning "forgiveness". I agree the word has been incorrectly used, but he is for a "path to citizenship" for those that have entered our country illegally, and I call that amnesty. If you want to have to speak Spanish to conduct you daily activities , if you want 27 people living in the house next door, if you want all your teachers to have to create programs for Spanish speakers, you will vote for McCain in the upcoming primary.  I live in Phoenix, and McCain wants open borders with Mexico and he does mind if this whole country turns into a giant barrio. He has a lot of friends that have gotten rich hiring these illegals.

Life is fair if you want it to be

Life can be fair if we want it to be, its all up to us, we decide, its called politics. When we have leaders like Kennedy and Carter , life becomes more fair, when we have leaders like Bush and Reagan, life becomes less fair. In a democracy the people are ultimately responsible for their leader's actions, we elect them and we have the power to impeach them and if they don't listen to us we can protest in the streets till they do.

Bush has slowly been turning our democracy into a tyranny and we have become scared, no wonder, you can be tazered for protesting an illegal and immoral war, you can be arrested for refusing the wishes of a police officer even if the police officer asks you to do something immoral or unreasonable.

The immigrant is the new jew! Republicans are looking for a scapegoat for all the problems they created, just like the Nazis chose to blame all their problems on the Jews. The more a candidat talks about immigration the more I see a future fascist. Immigration did not invade Iraq and give us a 9 trillion dollar debt, a falling dollar and impending recession...immigration did not cause the housing crisis, immigrants don't torture or build concentration camps like Guantanamo and Abu Graib, etc....Immigrants are the new Jews pure and simple. Be careful what you ask for people because after they go after the immigrants they go after you!

***VOTE FOR ROMNEY****

I am an Independent.  I am also a member of numerous anti-illegal websites/forums.

Tom Tancredo has dropped from the race, due to his concern about the Huckabee lies/surge in Iowa.  Tom has endorsed Mitt Romney.

PLEASE do not fall for the lies of McCain, Huckabee, Guliani, Clinton, Obama, or Edwards in regard to the illegals----ALL of them will reward the illegals for breaking our laws.  ALL of them will make it "appear" as if they are going to do something, but in reality they will not!!!  They will just make all of them legal, so that there are no more illegals!!

PLEASE PLEASE do not fall for their tricks!!  The future for you, your children, your grandchildren, and our country is at stake!!

If Tom Tancredo endorsed Romney, he feels that he is the BEST choice to get the job done.

Together, we can take back our country!!

Please join thousands of US citizens from throughout the country who are trying to save the US for US citizens and LEGAL immigrants---by joining the following sites/forums!!!

John McCain---Also Known as Juan McAmnesty

John McCain will give all of the illegals amnesty!!  He wants to make sure that there is a constant supply of cheap, illegal labor flowing into this country for his corporate buddies!!!!

Guliani, Huckabee, Clinton, Obama and Edwards will also reward the illegals for breaking our laws----AMNESTY!!  PLEASE do not fall for their tricks.  They will use word "games" to make it appear as if they are doing something----but their plan is to make them all legal, so that we have no more illegals.

Is this fair to the legal immigrants???  Is this fair to the millions of people throughout the world who have been waiting in line---trying to come into this country through the proper, legal process?????

Anybody who wants to see the

Anybody who wants to see the reality of what is happening to our country due to the illegals-----needs to take some time and visit Arizona, Texas, California, Colorado, Utah, etc................

---The illegals are taking the jobs of US citizens (why are they going to hire a US citizen when they can pay lower wages with NO benefits)

---The illegals are lowering the wages in many occupations (especially plumbing, electricians, landscapers, dry wallers--and all other construction occupations).

---The illegals are taking the jobs that used to go to our teenagers---or housewives and elderly--- that need to pick up some parttime work to make ends meet (fast food, grocery stores, hotels, etc.).

---The illegals are destroying the schools (the tax money of US citizens is being spent on tutors, translators, ESL classes, etc. for the children of illegals---eliminating many programs, tools, etc. for the children of US citizens----when they paid the school taxes!!!).

---The illegals are destroying hospitals (the illegals are not paying for healthcare benefits, so they are using the hospitals for their primary care doctors.  The hospitals pass on this expense to tax paying citizens.  In five years, 80 hospitals/clinics, etc. were forced to close in California due to going bankrupt over the illegals.)

---The illegals are destroying social benefit systems such as welfare, WIC, foodstamps, etc.  (PLEASE don't fall for the lies that illegals cannot get these benefits---They can buy whatever fraudulent documents they need for less than $75, which lets them get these benefits.  Or, they steal the name/identity/SS number of US citizens!!!)

---The illegals are destroying the lives of many US citizens by stealing their names/identities/SS numbers.  US citizens are forced to pay thousands of dollars toward attorney fees to get their credit, IRS debts, driving records cleared up.

Illegal Immigration! Nearly as costly as the WAR!

Only Duncan Hunter, Fred Thompson and Ron Paul have the right credentials, to stop the disasterous period of red ink. Alas, we cannot trust any Democrats to stop the illegal alien invasion, because their pandering for votes during the occupation of our nation. Even McCain destroyed his chances when he joined up with ultra-liberal Ted Kennedy to pass a mammoth immigration bill. We would have had millions of illegal aliens in our Social Security system, who never paid into it.

Taxpayers must stand with any official, who is willing to go that extra mile; no matter the political consequences. Very few politicians have the backbone to consumate the majority will of THE PEOPLE. They have become panderers to corporate and globalist open-border, unfair free-traders favors. America can no longer afford the $2 trillion dollar a year, to support the pariah contractors and businesses that hire illegal immigrants. They themselves receive all the profit, and the taxpayers gets the bill for hospitals, education and the massive prison appropriations. With between 12 to 20 million illegal aliens already here, with another estimated 17 million turning up on our shores by 2010, we are forced by federal law to subsidise these low income families. Taxpayers fall for this trick all the time, because the government doesn't tell us about food stamps, subsidised housing and a whole cornicopia of other free goodies. Its so easy for the citizen-taxpayer to carry the burden of cost's while the employer walks away. Free trade entities are behind the Bush administration unfettered movement of illegal cheap, foreign labor which is undermining our citizen workers wages. Most U.S. citizens have no concept of tomorrow, with outsourcing of jobs and business to foreign lands, along with the import of millions of people who can't speak our language and most have no wish to assimulate into our society. All but a few of our presidential contenders are not multi-millionaires, that show little interest in proposing laws protect our country from a globalist agenda? Both political parties are to blame, along with the american people for allowing this International globalist plan to continue. Our Industrial base is withering, unless you prefer a service nation? Big business must be held accountable for the destruction of our living standards. Hopefully, THE PEOPLE will show their intentions, starting with the Iowa Caucases and the upcoming New Hampshire Primaries! Are we going to have more of the same, with a depletion of our wealth and an erosion of our society. Or are we going to have fair free-trade and our national borders sealed for security and our prosperity?

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."
