Live: UNH vs. UVM, Game 3

|

Welcome to the Whittemore Center, where the universities of New Hampshire and Vermont meet with a trip to next weekend's Hockey East semifinals at stake. The Wildcats won Game 1, 7-4, then the Catamounts answered with a 1-0 win last night -- and whoever loses for a second time may well see their season end tonight.

FIRST PERIOD

*(Pregame) - UNH inserts Scott Pavelski into the lineup in place of John Henrion, and subsequently changes things around on lines 2, 3 and 4. Most notably, Stevie Moses moves down to the third trio (swapping with Greg Burke), Mike Sislo moves from left to right, and Dalton Speelman moves up to the third line (swapping with Kevin McCarey).

*(20:00) - We're underway at the Whitt, where a trip to the TD Garden is at stake.

*(19:00) - With Mike Sislo on the inside track to a puck that could've resulted in a breakaway, Josh Burrows hauls him down and UNH gets the game's first power play.

*(18:50) - The new lines mean a new power-play unit for UNH, which used Sislo at center between Speelman and Burke, with LeBlanc and Kipp at the points.

*(17:17) - UNH's advantage is over 18 seconds early, as Matt Campanale grabbed Patrick Cullity as the Catamounts raced toward Foster on a shorthanded rush, and was sent to the sin bin.

*(15:17) - The Wildcats look very sharp in killing the Vermont power play, and each side is 0-for-1.

*(11:00) - Seems to be a little easier for UNH to get in the zone tonight -- but not any simpler once inside the blue line. Like they did last night, Vermont is keeping everything to the perimeter and clogging passing lanes.

*(8:01) - Vermont gets another power play chance, as Damon Kipp goes to the box for holding.

*(6:40) - UNH's best chance of the night comes on a shorthanded 2-on-1, but Sislo took a half stride to settle LeBlanc's saucer pass and didn't have much of an angle by the time he was able to shoot.

*(6:01) - UNH at full strength. Vermont is now 0-for-2 with the power play tonight.

*(2:46) - After the reconfiguration, UNH's top three lines all look a little sharper -- particularly Burke and Moses, who swapped spots.

*(0:56.9) - Brayden Irwin gets a hooking call after he loses his stick under the arm of Phil DeSimone.

*(0:48.8) - ... but just eight seconds into the advance, Sislo cracks a Vermont defender in the corner and is called for roughing. The teams will skate four per side for 1:52.

*(0:00) - One period is complete, with the teams still scoreless. Vermont outshot UNH 11-8 in the period, but that means UNH put more shots on goal in that period than they did in any frame last night -- an indicator that moving the puck is a bit easier tonight than it was then.

SECOND PERIOD

*(20:00) - The middle frame -- a troubling frame for UNH lately -- is underway.

*(18:00) - Connor Hardowa rings the crossbar from the right-wing circle, and UNH remains scoreless since Paul Thompson's empty netter on Friday.

*(17:20) - Foster makes a couple of nice saves on UVM's second line, and keeps it tied.

*(16:00) - Shots on goal this period: UVM 6, UNH 0.

*(10:16) - UNH gets its first shot of the period on a Paul Thompson rush up the right wing. To that point it was 7-0 Vermont.

*(5:11) - UNH just went five more minutes between shots, and now has three for the period. Vermont has a 10-3 advantage in the period, and a 21-11 edge for the game.

*(0:04.8) - Tough call goes against the Cats, as Greg Burke was fighting for the puck and appeared to have his stick held by a Vermont player -- but instead it was Burke who was called for holding the stick.

*(0:00) - The second period is complete, with the officials leaving the ice to a chorus of boos. UNH is outshot 14-5 in the period, but escapes unscathed -- except for the fact it faces 1:56 shorthanded to start the final frame.

THIRD PERIOD

*(20:00) - The third period is underway, with UNH starting out a man shorthanded. The next 1:56 could have a huge say in who wins this game.

*(20:00) - By the way, UNH has now been limited to eight shots or less in six of eight periods in this series; it's happened to Vermont just three times (and the Catamounts haven't yet been held to lss than seven shots).

*(18:05) - UNH survives the penalty to Burke, and the teams are at even strength.

*(15:40) - The Wildcats get a good chance, as LeBlanc set up Sislo for a backhander in transition, but Madore sprawled to make get a piece with his stick and knock it wide.

*(14:47) - Intensity starting to pick up here among the 2,531 in the seats.

*(11:02) - UNH is shorthanded again. Fighting for a puck to Madore's left, Butler was whistled for holding.

*(10:00) - For the record, it has now been more than 125 minutes since UNH scored into a net defended by a goalie.

*(9:59) - Foster holds his position and takes a Josh Burrows deflection off the chest.

*(9:02) - UNH is back at even strength.

*(8:49) - Phil DeSimone's wrong-foot shot at Madore is UNH's third of the period. Vermont has nine on Foster.

*(8:09) - UNH has had six shots in the last 40 seconds -- unfortunately for the Cats, none have gone in.

*(7:13) - The Wildcats are starting to control play. On top of their shooting spree, they've also won five straight faceoffs, and kept the pressure on Madore.

*(5:42) - Foster with a nice positional save on an Anders Franzon bullet from the high slot.

*(4:47) - Foster bails out Matt Campanale, whose bad turnover gave Jonathan Higgins a good chance that Foster took in the stomach padding.

*(1:53) - We're down to the final two minutes, with playing have evened out a bit over the last few shifts.

*(1:00) - Chris McCarthy tips a shot from the point, and it trickles wotward the far pipe, but Foster gets his right toe on the puck to make sure it goes wide.

*(0:21.0) - The Catamounts swarm Foster, but Matt Campanale gets his body in front of one shot to keep it out. The Catamounts got to the loose rebound, and tried to stuff it through the traffic, but Foster and the five Wildcats on the ice form a mass of humanity along the goal line to keep from being penetrated. After a review  to determine what provoked the whistle, the faceoff will take place inside the UNH zone.

*(0:00) - Peter LeBlanc wins the draw, and although UNH turned the puck over at center ice in the closing seconds, Foster made his 41st save and so this one is headed to a sudden-death overtime ... which is 20 minute periods, with intermissions.

OVERTIME

*(20:00) - The extra session is underway. Next goal wins -- although in the last 135:52 there's been just shot put past a goalie, so it may not happen too soon. (In the first 44:08, there were 10 such scores.)

*(18:25) - Kessel is denied by Madore, who gets his glove up to protect the area where the crossbar and post meet.

*(18:00) - Foster makes a nice, in-tight save on Colin Vock after the puck took a funny bounce out of the corner.

*(17:20) - LeBlanc and Madore were both sprawled on the ice with the puck free, and although LeBlanc swept it toward the net Madore was able to get his blocker arm far enough to make the stop.

*(14:04) - Both teams are racing end to end. There's some great action on the ice right now. LeBlanc and Butler have both had good chances for New Hampshire.

*(11:48) - Foster is up to 47 saves; Madore is at 28.

*(11:23) - After Butler forced a turnover behind the net DeSimone got to tee one up from the inside of the left circle, but Madore somehow gloved the slapper. That's his best of the night.

*(11:10) - On the ensuing faceoff, Butler gets a chance but Madore gets his body on it to steer it wide.

*(10:50) - Butler with ANOTHER chance at the bottom of the left circle, but Madore gets his pad on it.

*(10:29) - UNH with a 10-6 edge in shots during overtime.

*(8:05) - The up-and-down action has subsided a little bit - but still there's enough going on that the winner could come at any moment. For either side.

*(6:23) - Big icing call, as Vermont was unable to make the line change they were looking for.

*(5:37) - Burrows gets a great chance, dancing his way from the side of the net, but Foster splits his legs and takes the puck in the pants.

*(4:08) - 1-0 UVM - Vermont is headed to Boston. Jay Anctil - the fourth-line center from Wolfeboro - lifted the stick of his defender in the left-wing circle, took it to the slot and wristed the rubber over Foster. Foster made 50 saves, but it wasn't enough to prevent the fourth 8 vs. 1 upset in Hockey East tournament history.
