Game Recap: UNH 4, Merrimack 3
DURHAM – The celebration was the sort usually reserved for championships, starting in one corner and rolling slowly toward the other as the pack of players pounded on the boards and their adoring fans rocked the glass right along with them.
It was all in response to the Paul Thompson goal that gave the University of New Hampshire hockey team a 4-3 overtime win over Merrimack College, a win that for now counts the same as any other regular-season triumph – but in about a month could prove a primary cause for a similarly raucous reaction. Should UNH hold on to the five-point lead it holds with 10 games to play, and win Hockey East’s regular-season championship for a seventh time, last night’s last-minute heroics will almost certainly rank among the biggest moments in that banner run.
