High groundwater levels are extra taxing for septic systems, especially private drainfield septic systems, so it's wise to conserve your water use while the ground is saturated.
The Lake Sunapee Protective Association recommends checking for leaky faucets, limiting toilet flushes, and easing the load on home washing machines for a few days. Some municipal septic systems have also been affected by flooding, and will also benefit from conservation.
If you're draining water from your home or basement with a sump pump, be sure you're not pouring it onto your drainfield. The extra water will make it even harder for the field to do its work in wet conditions.
