Divorcing Little Debbie

|

Today I was chatting with the guy working out on the elliptical machine next to mine. He started an exercise program when he found out he had type 2 diabetes. Now he exercise with the goal of being able to stop taking his medication, which is possible for some folks with this disease when they exercise, lose weight and monitor their diets. He referred to his experience as "divorcing Little Debbie" since he could no longer indulge in those types of snack cakes.

Part of my Let's Get Real plan mandates that no food is off limits, so I could enjoy Little Debbie treats from time to time. (Of course, my gym friend's journey is about more than just losing weight.) Still, I am reluctant to buy any Little Debbie treats because I have a hard time controlling myself around them-especially the Swiss Cake Rolls.

Once I open a package, I take the time to eat the chocolate coating off the outside first. Then I unroll the chocolate cake and lick the vanilla cream from inside before eating the cake itself. I can get into such a rhythm that it isn't long before I eat the entire box.

So Swiss Cake Rolls are on my "permanently given up for Lent list." What about you? Are their foods you simply will not allow in the house because you can't control yourself?

oh my

double stuff oreo cookies....although I do break down and buy them once in awhile.  Luckily, I have a house full of kids who help devour a whole package in one day...

me too!

That is so funny...I feel the same way about swiss rolls. I'll buy them thinking I can be good and eat just one and give the rest to the kids. Then I get angry with them when they want one. They are much too easy to eat quickly. Maybe we could just buy the single serving of them and not a whole box (yeah, right!!). But ya know, I'm thinking that they would be terrible sweet at this point anyhow.
:)
Progress not perfection!

Thank you Linda !

Linda,
I just wanted to thank you for inspiring me to do something. About 4 weeks ago I started reading your column and Blog. I have about 50 lbs to lose. In one of the blog comment, someone mentioned a website Sparkspeople.com. I went to the website and I've lost 20 lbs. Your column and blog has started me on journey to a healthier life. I appreciated this. I agree just dieting is not the answer; exercise and diet is the magic pill. Good Luck in your journey and thank you again.

Aren't kids great

Terri, since all of my stepkids are adults now, I give extra treats out to the neighbor's kids when I need to reduce the sweet population in my house. Maybe that's why my house is so popular in the neighborhood...

Good for you, Rleona

I'm glad my own journey is helping you with yours. Keep us posted and let us know if you need a blog shoulder to lean on.

junk food

I noticed that I began losing weight after giving up eating junk food. Instead of buying prepackaged cakes and cookies, make your own. This way, you know exactly what ingredients you've used to make it. It tastes better, and you will realize that you have not given up anything for the "sake of dieting". I hate that word. People say "I'm on a diet", as if they have given up great foods. Choose you poison, junk food, soda and cigarettes will rapidly destroy your body. Stay healthy.

make your own

Another good thing about making your own cakes and cookies is that, since it takes an effort to make them, you have time to decide if you really, really, really want them.
