Are You Listening?

|

I'm sorry it has been so long since I last posted. I'm battling a head cold that just won't quit. It has really zapped my energy. I work at my computer all morning to meet my deadlines and then spend the afternoon curled up on the sofa reading or watching TV.

Yesterday was the first day I've really felt better. It was also the first day I did any exercise, except for the little bit of shoveling after the Valentine's Day storm. (I couldn't help it. I had waited all year for a big snow storm and I wasn't going to miss it.)

As I posted before, the experts say you should be able to exercise with a head cold. However, all my body is telling me to do is rest, so I'm listening. I'm just wondering if it is the illness that is calling for rest, or is it my old self that just doesn't want to exercise?

I've been preaching for some time now about listening to our bodies, be it choosing to rest when ill or what foods to eat.

This winter I've been on a comfort food craze. All my body seems interested in eating are pastas, stews, casseroles, and cake. Then a few days ago it stared "yelling" for salads. Last night a stalk of celery satisfied a craving better than any cookie ever could.

I've started losing weight again after last month's plateau. (Look for more about that in my column this Sunday.) So, maybe my body knows what it is talking about. It is just up to me to listen.

Listening

Your blog reminded me of a time long ago when I had a period of being restricted, for monetary reasons, to a diet of homemade bean soups and homemade breads. It was probably one of the best diets but I remember DREAMING vividly of eating salads, big green leafy, tomato, cucumber, carrot salads.

This winter I have been making soups and stews with really good outcomes---and my partner has started to make the bread. You can throw almost anything into soup and make it healthy and fully comforting...

I also, lately, am finding a cup of hot chocolate, really good chocolate, in the afternoon or evening, made with milk and doctored with a drop of peppermint oil very relaxing.

Your body seems to be looking for the good stuff and that is a good thing.

Glad you're on the mend.

Isn't that funny...

If we just "LISTEN". We have a bad habit of going out to eat alot, as you may remember. But it's funny, if I stop and think what am I hungry for and no restaurants come to mind, maybe we don't need to go out to eat. We've had some great home cooked meals lately. And after all the goodies between turkey day and Christmas, nothing with sugar in it even sounded good.
Hope you're feeling better soon.
We've finally had some nice winter days here. First we didn't have any snow, then snow with really COLD temps. Now its about normal for February. I need to get out and play some.

salads

I backed-off on eating salads after all of the e-coli hoopla a few months ago, but I finally got to the point where I was craving a salad. Hopefully the food growers have fixed their problems.

I wrote a soup article for the food page a couple of weeks ago, which ment making lots of soups. So many in fact that my husband and stepson started to rebel. I froze some of the leftovers and they will make a return visit soon.

Funny you should mention making bread. I'm considering making a loaf this weekend. It has been a while since I've made one, unless you consider making pizza dough the same as making bread. I never buy premade pizza dough (or sauce, for that matter.)

Listening

I love going to restaurants and if I could afford it we would probably go every other day.

It's funny what your body will tell you to order at a restaurant if you listen. Many times I just get a couple of appetizers with a soup or salad. Sometimes all I want is that restaurant's signature dessert. It makes for some funny meals, but hey, if that's what my body wants...
