Pregame notes

Derek Jeter will sit out his second consecutive game with a bruised right thumb...The Sox will need some innings from David Pauley tonight to help their depleted bullpen as Keith Foulke will once again be unavailable (Foulke refused to answer questions about himself, or his injury, so we had a bizarre conversation with him about his Uncle Lester, and speed limits in South Dakota)...Terry Francona said Pauley will "have more rope than usual," let's hope he doesn't hang himself with that rope...Goose Gossage met Jon Papelbon for the first time before the game...Ron Guidry told me that Papelbon reminds him of Gossage, but Pap isn't nearly as ugly...Josh Beckett seemed rather quiet walking around the clubhouse, I guess a 5.27 ERA will do that to you...The Sox made a roster move before the game calling up phenom Craig Hansen, and demoting Jermaine Van Buren...Francona wouldn't name a starter for game one of Saturday's day/night doubleheader (most likely they'll call up Jon Lester)..Sunday's starter is up in the air too, David Pauley is scheduled to pitch, but Abe Alvarez is a possibility to be called up from Pawtucket..It's the day David Wells is scheduled to come off the DL, but things aren't going well, and he plans to travel out to San Diego to see a specialist...I'll be back after the game with a recap, and some quotes..ttyl-Chris
