On Frozen Pond
Submitted by Nisa Simila on January 9, 2010 - 20:55. Greater Concord | Family lifeWe often go to Cheshire Arena in Swanzey, NH for skating, but there are several other options in the area. Peterborough has an ice rink, but unfortunately it's currently non-functioning due to needing some major repairs. The Jaffrey Rec. Dept. turns its basketball court into a rink at Humiston Field and The Clark in Winchendon, MA supposedly maintains a rink while Conway Arena in Nashua has recreational skating times for all. But the Monadnock region, with more than its share of lakes and ponds, offers many alternatives to regularly maintained or Zamboni-smoothed ice for those in search of a more rustic, outdoorsy, natural experience.
Holiday Happenings '09
Submitted by Nisa Simila on January 3, 2010 - 01:34. Greater Concord | Monadnock regionI suppose I should re-introduce myself. Even though I've had this blog here for quite awhile, my posts are so sporadic that I don't think anyone knows I'm here!
I'm a transplanted Canadian (so I spell words with "ou" instead of "o" as you'll see throughout my blog. I also throw the odd French phrase or word out there too) living in the heart of the Monadnock region of NH with my native NH husband and young kids. This blog will mostly be about our life in the area, us checking out fun activities and destinations and some not-so-fun ones too because I'm a firm believer of balance in one's life. If you know of any family-friendly local events, email me through this blog or comment on an entry and we can check them out or I can mention them to help get the word out. My goal is not to sound too much like a travel brochure or sales pitch so I'm going to throw in a lot of vaguely personal stuff in the mix. So, come join me as we discover the area together!
Keene Pumpkin Festival 2009

A few Saturdays ago, my youngest and I ventured out to the 19th Annual Keene Pumpkin Festival. The Keene Pumpkin Festival is a veritable feast for the eyes - from the stands holding hundreds and thousands of pumpkins along the middle of Main Street to the creative costumes in the children's parade to the colorful characters that mill about to see and be seen.
Double the Museums, Half the Fun

In recent weeks, my girls and I have visited 2 different art museums in the region. The first one, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, MA, is one of our favourite places to go because it combines our love of reading and art together. A bonus is that the artwork is familiar, especially important for my 4 year old. However, both my oldest and I can still appreciate and discuss good art done well. The museum itself recognizes that by virtue of its collection and exhibits, kids will be among the many museum-goers there and they have taken care to reflect that in the way they display the art, the programs they offer, and the facilities. We could spend hours there and we have!
Be Happy

One time, my husband, oldest and I were at Parker's Maple Barn over in Mason when we bumped into some friends of ours. Their oldest, who was my daughter's best friend, was 3 at the time and as all parents of 3 year olds know, the terrible twos are just a warm-up.
We have arrived!
Submitted by Nisa Simila on July 22, 2008 - 13:11. Rte. 202 / 9 | Monadnock regionThis is the first summer that my girls and I are spending it structure-free. I've taken the summer off of work and the girls, save for 1 week of horse camp for my oldest, aren't signed up for anything. I must be crazy.
