Code Words & Political Correctness
Submitted by Bill Bunker on February 24, 2008 - 13:37. Barnstead | Life's challengesJust this morning, I read a letter in the Monitor accusing another writer of being a “sexist” and last week a couple accusing people of being “racist”. Many letters have referred to xeno’phobia’, homo’phobia’ and others that want to ‘level the playing field’ and ‘celebrate diversity’. It would be a colossal waste of time to count the number of times we are barraged by this unending doublespeak as our language today is overwhelmed by emotionally charged phrases, dividing us and immediately stereotyping people based on their beliefs. They amount to code words for the dismissal of others.
